White sage (Salvia apiana) is a plant native to the southwestern United States, valued for centuries for its medicinal and spiritual properties. Indigenous Americans used white sage to treat coughs and colds and as an additive in therapeutic baths. Women also prepared sage infusions to aid with childbirth.

However, its most significant use was in spiritual practices. The burning of white sage played a vital role in tribal ceremonies, serving as a deep spiritual ritual believed to cleanse spaces and people. The smoke was thought to release negative or toxic energies and ward off harmful spirits, creating a purified environment.
